El Futuro - Opp. for Internet Use, Business, & SEO in Mexico in ...

SEO in MexicoI haven?t spent that much time discussing the internet and the potential for internet marketing and SEO in Latin American -yet. It has been an area that just hasn?t received great attention. This is largely due to the fact that internet penetration in Latin America has been slow and the market for building an optimized online presence is not fully developed. Thus is the nature of developing markets, they hold great potential, but each country?s situation is different ? it depends on whether they are three years, six years, or more from entering a space where they have the infrastructure, support, business presence, and computing public to push for all the benefits the internet brings. A developed internet landscape not only brings a market for internet advertising and SEO, but it also brings marked social and economic benefits in terms of international development and progress. A McKinsey study interestingly addresses this very point.

With this context, we turn our attention to a leader in internet in Latin America ? Mexico. The country has seen significant growth in the internet during the last six years and the government is making it a priority to continue to advance in this realm. From a business perspective, the Mexican market, although being the third most connected in Latin America, is largely underdeveloped in terms of marketing. But as the internet advances in the country, the growth will spell great opportunity for many companies who serve the Mexican market to utilize SEO and optimize their web properties and essentially be ahead of the curve.

The Mexican Market
The Mexican government has unveiled its National Digital Agenda affirming the goals of the government as it outlines its ICT strategy for the years to come. In broad terms the plan sets out to ?reduce the digital gap and make a positive impact on the telecommunications markets in Mexico,? according to Mexico?s secretary of communications and transport, Dionisio P?rez J?come. The stats offered are significant, the number of internet users has doubled since 2006, now reaching 40 million, and in terms of broadband connections, there were 13 million fixed and 7.8 million mobile at the conclusion of 2011. A leading issue is access, as it is far from universal.

Check back tomorrow for the rest of my thoughts on internet in Mexico and how specifically businesses and SEOs can benefit from its advance. Kyocera DuraPlus (Sprint)

The Kyocera DuraPlus ($69.99) should come with a heavy machinery warning: If you drop it, it may cause damage to the machinery. The DuraPlus is a gigantic brick of a push-to-talk cell phone, and one of the first to hook into Sprint's next-generation?Direct Connect?service. It's a lot like Kyocera's recent DuraMax?($69.99, 3.5 stars) and DuraCore?($49.99, 3 stars), but trades their flip-style form factor for a slab design that may be easier to use out in the field. The DuraPlus ?is good for voice-only, push-to-talk communication, but it's a massive phone with few other features.

Design and Call Quality
Colleagues passing my desk kept stopping to comment on the huge size of the DuraPlus. At 5.3 by 2.2 by .9 inches (HWD) and a whopping 6.7 ounces, the DuraPlus is?definitely not going to fit in your pocket, but it'll fit on your tool belt.?Though the virtually indestructible Sonim XP3300 Force?($525, 3.5 stars) is another huge handset, it wears its size more gracefully than the DuraPlus does. The DuraPlus's exterior is made mostly of grippy, scratch-resistant black rubber, with metallic accents on the front.

The DuraPlus is a rugged phone that meets military specification 810G, which makes it resistant to dust, extreme temperatures, low pressure, rain, salt fog, shock, and vibration. It can also be submerged in up to 3 feet of water for 30 minutes. The phone survived numerous drops to the floor of the PCMag Labs, along with half an hour's worth of submersion in a container of water. A plastic screw secures the battery cover tightly, but you can easily unlock it with your fingernail.

The phone's 2-inch, 320-by-240-pixel LCD looks sharp. The font is a little small by default, but you can make it larger. The keypad has too many function keys, but at least all of the keys are large, raised, and well-spaced, which should make it possible to dial while wearing gloves. One of those function keys activates the surprisingly powerful LED flashlight on top of the phone, which may come in handy depending on your work environment.

The DuraPlus is a dual-band EV-DO Rev. A (850/1900 MHz) device with no Wi-Fi.?Reception is average and voice quality is good overall. Voices sound rich and clear in the earpiece, but while the volume goes loud, it isn't loud enough to be heard in a noisy work environment. The speakerphone, however, is very clear and goes super loud, which is something we felt was lacking on the DuraCore and DuraMax. Calls also sounded good through a Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset ($129, 4.5 stars) and the Nuance-powered voice dialing worked well. Battery life was excellent at 9 hours and 27 minutes of talk time.

Direct Connect
Sprint's new CDMA push-to-talk system combines the fast Internet speeds and nationwide coverage of Sprint's CDMA network with the instantaneous push-to-talk of the old Nextel iDEN network. That's great, but it doesn't really matter for a device like the DuraPlus, which isn't built for heavy Web access.

You need to be in a Sprint coverage area in order to use the DuraPlus, but you can still make push-to-talk calls to Nextel iDEN subscribers.?Direct Connect supports Call Alert With Text, which sends an audio alert and text message to another subscriber, along with Group Connect, which can connect 20 subscribers together at once. You can also use the Direct Connect button to mass-message up to 200 Direct Connect subscribers in one shot, or to send recorded messages to email addresses or handsets via text message.?

For this review, I tested Direct Connect between two different DuraPlus phones. It takes about a second or to initiate the connection, after which transmissions are nearly instantaneous. Voice quality is clear and you should no trouble hearing someone, even in a noisy environment.

Apps, Multimedia, and Conclusions
Rugged form factor and Direct Connect aside, the DuraPlus is an almost featureless feature phone. The main menu is the same 12 icon grid that Sprint has used on many flip phones in the past (including the DuraCore and the DuraMax), which gives the phone a dated look and feel. To make things worse, this interface requires at least nine button presses to perform simple tasks like pairing a Bluetooth headset. There's an Access NetFront 4.1 browser for reading WAP pages, but the screen is too small and browsing is slow. There's support for TeleNav GPS Navigator, which gets you voice-enabled, turn-by-turn directions, as well as Sprint Family Locator.

There's a nonstandard 2.5mm headphone jack on the right side of the phone for voice headsets. The phone has a meager 64MB of free internal memory and no microSD card slot, but without a music or video player, this shouldn't be an issue.

If you need a loud, rugged, brick of a phone to shout commands through, the Kyocera DuraPlus is a decent choice. For the same price, the Kyocera DuraMax is a slightly smaller rugged flip phone, and adds a decent camera and a microSD card slot to the mix. The Kyocera DuraCore costs $20 less, and is essentially the same phone as the DuraMax, minus the camera. If those phones aren't loud enough for you, and you don't mind sticking with Sprint's steadily declining iDEN network, the?Motorola Brute i686?($139.99, 3.5 stars) gets you very loud push-to-talk, albeit for a higher price. And if you're really looking to take advantage of Direct Connect, the Motorola Admiral?($99.99, 4 stars) is a rugged Android smartphone with excellent multimedia features, as well as access to more than 450,000 apps in the Google Play store.

AOL to sell more than 800 patents to Microsoft

NEW YORK (AP) ? Faltering Internet icon AOL was able to squeeze out more than $1 billion from Microsoft for a trove of some 800 patents in an auction, the latest sign of just how valuable such portfolios can be for the world's biggest technology companies. "There is a fight for market share occurring on multiple fronts ? technology, patents, advertising," said Colin Gillis, an analyst with BGC Financial who covers Microsoft. "Microsoft, more so than others out there, has been (using) its patent portfolio as a way to generate license fees. This should strengthen that." Microsoft refused to say what the patents cover. Benchmark analyst Clayton Moran said they revolve around Internet technology, including advertising, search and mapping. This would help Microsoft go up against Google Inc., a big rival that is ahead of it in all three areas. Patents have become a hot commodity in the high-tech industry in recent years. They're useful both for attack ? for suing competitors ? and for defense ? for warding off lawsuits with threats of countersuits. Rising star Facebook, for instance, recently purchased 750 patents from IBM Corp., a move that likely helped the company defend itself after Yahoo Inc. accused it of violating 10 Yahoo patents. Facebook shot back with its own lawsuit, claiming Yahoo is violating 10 Facebook patents. Software patents can have broad applications, and thousands of patents can apply to a complicated product like a cellphone. Google is buying phone maker Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. for $12.5 billion, in large part, to get hold of its patents. AOL's shares surged to their highest level in more than a year following the announcement. The company agreed to sell 800 of its patents and license others to Microsoft for about $1.06 billion in cash. The New York-based Web site developer and Internet access company said it plans to return some of the sale proceeds to its shareholders. After the sale, AOL said it should have about $15 per share of cash on hand. Its stock rose $7.83, or 43 percent, to $26.25 in midday trading, adding more than $750 million to its market capitalization. Microsoft shares slipped 20 cents, to $31.32 amid a broader market decline. AOL's move signals that it's listening to stockholders who are asking for more return on their investment. In February, one of AOL's largest shareholders, an investment firm, said it will nominate candidates for the company's board because it wasn't doing enough to make money from its patents. AOL said at the time that it had already begun to look at ways to unlock patent value. After the sale, AOL said it will still hold more than 300 patents and applications covering a variety of technologies, including advertising, search, content generation, social networking, mapping, multimedia, and security among others. As part of the deal, AOL also received a license to use the patents it sold to Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft Corp. "The combined sale and licensing arrangement unlocks current dollar value for our shareholders and enables AOL to continue to aggressively execute on our strategy to create long-term shareholder value," AOL Chairman and CEO Tim Armstrong said in a statement. AOL said it will determine the best way to distribute a "significant portion" of the sale proceeds to shareholders before the sale closes, which is expected to happen by the end of this year. AOL Inc. owns news sites like Huffington Post, Engadget and Techcrunch, but still makes much of its money by providing dial-up Internet access. __ AP Technology Writer Peter Svensson contributed to this story.

African energy: Eastern El Dorado?

In energy terms, east Africa has long been the continent's poor cousin. Until last year it was thought to have no more than 6 billion barrels of proven oil reserves, compared with 60 billion in west Africa and even more in the north. Since a third of the region's imports are oil-related, it has been especially vulnerable to oil shocks. The World Bank says that, after poor governance, high energy costs are the biggest drag on east Africa's economy.

All that may be about to change.

Kenya, the region's biggest economy, was sent into delirium on March 26 by the announcement of a big oil strike in its wild north. A British oil firm, Tullow, now compares prospects in the Turkana region and across the border in Ethiopia to Britain's bonanza from the North Sea. More wells will now be drilled across Kenya, which also holds out hopes for offshore exploration.

Kenya's find raised less joy in Uganda, where oil was first struck in 2006. Tullow, together with China's CNOOC and Total of France, will start pumping it next year, initially at a paltry rate of 5,000 barrels a day. But the Lake Albert basin, which straddles the border between Uganda and Congo, holds more than a billion barrels of proven reserves and possibly twice that in potential finds.

South Sudan, for years the largest oil producer in the region and locked in an oil dispute with Sudan, now wants to send crude out through Kenya on a pipeline to a proposed new port in Lamu. Such a channel could also serve Ethiopia, which shares Kenya's joy about their joint oil prospects. But their winnings pale next to those farther south. Tanzania has done well out of gold, earning record receipts of $2.1 billion last year, a 33 percent increase over 2010. It will do even better from natural gas. The past month has seen the discovery of enormous offshore gas fields. Those finds have drawn interest from Britain's BG Group and Statoil of Norway. Statoil's recent gas find is estimated to hold almost a billion barrels of oil equivalent.

Happily, Tanzania's gas field extends south to Mozambique, where Italy's Eni last month unveiled a find of 1.3 billion barrels of oil equivalent, matching similar finds by an American firm, Andarko. With plans to build a liquefied natural gas terminal, Mozambique could be a big exporter within a decade.

Yet the region is not just excited about fossil fuels; a parallel push toward alternative energy is underway. Several east African countries are keen to realize the Rift Valley's geothermal prospects. One of the world's largest wind farms is being built in Kenya, not far from the new-found oil in Turkana. Its backers say it will produce 300 megawatts, three times the total electricity output of Rwanda.

That is a drop in the bucket for Ethiopia. Its rivers, plunging from well-watered highlands into deep canyons, have enormous hydropower potential. Meles Zenawi, the prime minister, has ordered the construction of a series of dams at a total cost of over $8 billion. The jewel is the $4.7 billion Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on the Blue Nile. This will generate 5,250 megawatts, increasing electricity production in the country fivefold, providing a surplus for export and allowing Ethiopia to open up as a manufacturer.

The arrival of potential energy wealth comes with risks. Instead of bringing the region together, petro-rivalries could drive it apart. The continued dispute between South Sudan and Sudan should serve as a warning: South Sudan has cut off its supply of 300,000 barrels a day to Sudan, most of which is destined for China, complaining that transit fees to Sudan's export terminal are too high.

Security is another problem, underscored by deadly grenade attacks in the Kenyan port of Mombasa this month by jihadists connected with Somalia's Al-Qaida-linked Al-Shabab militia.

Roman Catholic Church: Canadian Version 665 & Counting &?The Holy 'Ghost'

While the Church is getting back to a few basics of the Mass from pre- Vatican II where the absence of an actual Pope, because he was feeble and ailing, but admittedly 'may' have loved the changes as he was considered, not a heavy thinker by the intelligentsia, and 'one of the common boys' by the masses anyway.... they really, really need to bring back the Holy 'Ghost' they killed off, (apparently, figuratively, and literally) for the promotion of the Spirit...for 2 reasons.

1) The word Ghost is another perfect way of explaining the mystery of the Trinity. The letter G for God is capitalized or front and centre, the word 'host' follows as the Son of God, naturally. And both letter and word are bonded as 'Ghost' in the Holy Ghost.

2) In modern parley the term spirit is held more in association with the subjective thought, than 'Ghost' as an objective contributor to thought and the recognition of the fact that something other than our own prideful intellect is a contributor to our guidance, especially on matters of morality and conscience, often fragile and tenderly susceptible to temptation into narcissism and extrapolated into unworkable, and eventually self-punishing in populism, or as Christ put it, 'with the world'.

The Canadian Bishops, no stranger to the easier way, over the better way, have erroneously long ordained the Canadian laity with the power of self-emanating Truths (beginning with the Winnepeg Statement' that are suitably and wonderfully convenient for the Bishops and the laity, but have now panned out to a Canadian Church barely recognizable as Catholic, and no more a Church, than the United bowls of mush churches.

The Bishops proclaimed that parishioners could now guide their own consciences by what was best for them in their own circumstances i.e. artificial birth control and abortion and the heavy following of Marxist tenants of the world, and why not, Marxism has championed academia, populism and huge portions of the Catholic Church itself, (South America being a prime example) to reveal there was no truths, as long as you followed Marxism, the most, both, obvious and hidden modern anti-Christ of our times, and of world domination, over say the historical regional anti-Christ originator of Islam.

From the mouth of the Devil, Marx, himself, ?Christianity is like spit-little?, of which no truer prophesy was foretold of the free nations but with only the help of the modern take by Christianity itself within these nations, today.

There are to be no leaders and especially no god, in Marxism and all his isms except of course, his disciples, the proletariats, the union leaders, the feminist leaders, the dictators, the atheist academics...

There is to be no beauty in music, no art in the arts, no innocent entertaining in entertainment, no modern philosophy not embracive of death and perversion, common man is god, to be champion and anything he is okay with is valid to the world as long as it is to the detriment of his fellow man, void of the True Christ or an ally, or recognizer thereof, as the good thief, in short, a modern world offered for Satan to his best for whatever greater purpose to the Truth, no doubt to test for any, any effort at all of resistance. The end is at hand not by revelation of word of God but as the only possible outcome on the current accelerated perversely celebrated path to Hell the world is massively engaged in.

As for the Church in Canada, if it were not dying already, satisfying itself to be no part of the greater Church to withstand the Gates of Hell but content to go from modern retirement, to present burying itself, with the dead, it would be far better, that it would be killed off, and maybe it should be, as it was in the post revolution days of France, of the child and Patron Saint of Priests, the Cure D'ars.

At that time the French 'State' as it were, took over the Catholic Church by attrition, only not as bad as Canada today and its sorry state whereas, Bishops have even abandoned the True Presence of Christ in the Eucharist to the likes of 'orders' from public health boards.

In false sacrifice, they have given the name of Christ's Universal Church for Marxist unions?, publicly elected officials? and highly compensated, therefore I contend highly corruptible (read full funding), school boards? to pimp the very name Catholic towards the destruction of the souls of youth, not only to the spite of Christ's most treasured possessions, but to the only obvious 'future' of the Church and who at such young ages already know to abandon a place of worship that has nothing 'special' to offer, but platitudes and no claim to Truth or that could possibly drawn, from non-conforming of mutual messages from church to church, from diocese to diocese, from Bishop to Bishop, from Priest to Priest

They closed down Catholic hospitals and nursing homes without a whimper by order of the State.

They adopted perverse sexual stretched ideologies by order of state to contrive and control social interaction of youth.

The Canadian Bishops have yet to even acknowledge a single problem of the many, with the education of Catholic youth, they willingly and knowingly sacrificed to the world?

As a boy, Jean Vianney went to the underground church, still in communion with the true Church, and the underground protector and keeper of the Holy Sacraments for the French nation of the times. They only had true Bishops and priests who chose not to stay on and collaborate with the State takeover, and they often did it under the threat of death.

Whereas, St. Peter was hung upside down on a cross, for his faith in and to Christ, I fear modern Canadian Bishops, close to retirement or who should be retired, wouldn't sacrifice a chair on the banquet circuit or an ill written word from the scribes of the world. They do all their activities in the dark as they have done since Vatican II, and it doesn't amount to much regardless because they fear the light with their total lack of courage, their denial of reality and relish the pride of their unearned praise, yet they consider and claim to be followers of the Christ on this day the Easter Vigil.

Who is keeping vigil or looking after the Lord's sheep, and innocence and souls of His most beloved children?

Higher, Bishop name- granted Catholic Institutions of highest level of academia, but non monitored , cared of, or for, of the likes of the one in our nation's capital on philosophy and theology, no less, have totally absconded to the world.

At a recent graduation ceremony of this higher institution of Catholic Church, not only was there not one prayer said, no mention of God, Christ, the Virgin Mary, Sacrifice, or guidance of the Holy Ghost in a bare Chapel void of Catholic icons and statues, the leader of this cult orated his own valedictorian speech which centered on the current Marxist populist occupy movements across Canada.

He took great pride in how those entrusted to him were taught not only knowledge of his liking but how they were trained to totally think, differently from now on. And to that end I believe he may have been successful. If this is the highest and best in official 'Catholic' Canadian higher 'private' education, give us the devil in the world not just one of those in our midst.

Bishops...defend yourself to me...if not to the world, I implore you, what do you see as the state of Catholicism in Canada and what are you prepared to do about it?

Show us that the Holy Ghost had cause or any effect in your ordination. The youth are now your unbelievers! Drop your pride and fear to the world, souls are at stake.

CO2 was hidden in the ocean during the Ice Age

Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres

Bremerhaven/Bern, 29 March 2012. Why did the atmosphere contain so little carbon dioxide (CO2) during the last Ice Age 20,000 years ago? Why did it rise when the Earth's climate became warmer? Processes in the ocean are responsible for this, says a new study based on newly developed isotope measurements. This study has now been published in the scientific journal "Science" by scientists from the Universities of Bern and Grenoble and the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in the Helmholtz Association.

Around 20,000 years ago, the atmospheric CO2 concentration during the last Ice Age was distinctly lower than in the following warm period. Measurements from Antarctic ice cores showed this already two decades ago. An international team of glaciologists thereafter looked even further back in time. The climate researchers found that this close connection between carbon dioxide and temperature has existed over the past 800,000 years: with low CO2 concentrations during the Ice Ages and higher CO2 values during warm periods. Now they tried to answer also the question as to where the carbon dioxide was hidden during the Ice Ages and how it got back into the atmosphere at their ends.

"We have now been able to identify processes in the ocean which are connected to the observed rise in CO2", says Dr. Jochen Schmitt, lead author of the recently published study and researcher at the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of Bern. According to Schmitt, during the Ice Age more and more carbon dioxide accumulated in the deep ocean, causing the concentration of atmospheric CO2 to drop. Only at the end of the Ice Age was this stored CO2 transported back to the sea surface through changing ocean circulation and thus emitted back into the atmosphere, write the scientists in the scientific journal "Science".

A new method for isotope measurements has now made it possible for the first time "to reliably decode the fingerprint of the CO2 preserved in the ice", explains Schmitt. He and his colleague Prof. Hubertus Fischer initially developed these new isotope measurement methods for ice cores at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research and further refined them in many years of research work after moving to Bern. Using the new method the glaciologists extract the air trapped in the ice core completely and the CO2 contained in the air is thoroughly cleaned. The different isotopes of the CO2 are analysed in a mass spectrometer and from this data the origin of the carbon dioxide can be derived.

Researchers suggested back in the eighties that this puzzle could be solved using an isotopic "CO2 fingerprint". However, it had so far not been possible to make a precise analysis of the carbon dioxide trapped in the Antarctic ice due to the technical hurdles. The glaciologists and the climate researchers at the Universities of Bern and Grenoble and of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research have now managed a breakthrough with their study.

Development of Future Scenarios

"The new data have already enabled us to revise and improve a few theories about the possible reasons for CO2 fluctuations. Measurement data from the past enable us to gain a clearer idea about how the climate must have looked at the end of the Ice Age", says Jochen Schmitt. And now the data must be compared with the results from climate models to verify and further develop the models. "In addition to the scientific curiosity about how our Earth functioned in the past, the main question to be asked is how the Earth will develop under the influence of man", explains Jochen Schmitt. These are important scenarios for the future because the CO2 content in the atmosphere has never been anywhere near as high over the past 800,000 years as today, says the climate researcher.
